You Canuck be Serious! Canada climbs the cybercrime league table.

May 13, 2011

Hockey, frigid winters and South Park are all things traditionally associated with Canada but, if a new report from web, email and data security firm Websense is to be believed, we should add cyber attacks to the list. Canada often features towards the top of the UN’s annual ‘most livable countries’ list and it would appear this has attracted an unhealthy number of cyber terrorists in recent months.

According to the report Canadian servers have seen a 319% annual increase in hosting phishing sites – second only to Egypt in terms of the growth of sites hosting crimeware.  It also experienced a 52% rise in bot networks and jumped from number 13 to number six in hosted cybercrime – a position that continues to rise, according to a senior researcher at Websense.

It seems that cyber terrorists, hackers and malware creators have tired of the traditional ‘homes’ of cyber attacks, like China, Russia and South East Asia, and are using Canada’s historically clean cut reputation for online security and are moving their command and control centres to Canada in order to launch a range of attacks on consumers and businesses around the world.

Bet you didn’t see that one coming, ‘eh?
